The Deputy Mayor Program
The Office of Mayor Max deputizes children, adults, and pets making them Deputy Mayors of Idyllwild. They become part of the Mayor’s office and on the Mayor’s Peace on Earth Team (POET) initiative. Whenever visitors come to town, the children are asked if they would like to become Deputy Mayors. They are given a Mayor Max tie and a Deputy Mayor Certificate making them Deputies and they become an extension of the Mayor’s office where they live. Anyone wishing to become a Deputy Mayor of Idyllwild may do so. We often get adults asking to be part of this program. and the parents always thank us for making their children Deputy Mayors of Idyllwild. Children are thanked for all the great things they are going to do in their lifetime to help other people, and they are asked if that sounds good to them. They always say, “Yes”, and this is a very joyful part of the Mayor’s program when visiting with the public.
The majority of the deputizing happens during the downtown visiting with the public where often more than 300 deputies are made over a weekend. Mayor Max ties for small, medium, and large-size dogs (or pets of any kind) are given along with the Deputy Mayor Certificates. Pets do not have to be present to become Deputy Mayors of Idyllwild, but we do ask visitors to allow us to first deputize those pets and children that are present before deputizing those that are not. We usually run out of ties and certificates on any weekend day, but when we do, we then offer to mail the ties and certificates to the parents for their children and pets. We then have them send us their names and addresses, and we mail the Deputy Mayor Certificates and ties to them the following week.
